June 8 ‘Plant Walk’ with Pagosa Herbalist Lake McCullough

The Weminuche Audubon Society and Audubon Rockies are excited to sponsor three summer plant walks with certified herbalist Lake McCullough.

Join us for a fun and educational ramble through the forest as we discover edible and medicinal native plants. The walks are free of charge.

The first walk on June 8 will explore early summer herbs, wildflowers and edible plants in the ponderosa pine ecozone in Martinez Canyon.

In order to provide an optimal experience for participants, there is a 15-person maximum on each walk. Please call McCullough ahead to reserve a space at (970) 398-0923.

Attendees will meet at San Jose Court in the Lake Forest subdivision at 9am, and the outing will last until noon.

Heading north on N. Pagosa Blvd, turn left onto Lake Forest Circle and then onto Arrowhead Drive after 1.2 miles. San Jose Court will be a short distance on the left. The walk is about 3 miles round-trip with some moderately steep and rocky sections. Be prepared for rugged trails and unpredictable weather, and leave dogs at home.

In order to allow the greatest number of people to participate and learn about plants native to our area, this summer we are asking that attendees only sign up for one of the walks offered this season.

In addition to the June walk, walks will be offered on July 13 and August 3. These will take us into high-elevation habitat near the Wolf Creek Pass area.

McCullough’s knowledge and fun sense of humor have made these walks very popular and spaces fill quickly. We are fortunate that she shares her expertise with us. Give her a call to add your name to the June walk list.
