Motorists can expect snow showers starting on December 1 into the weekend west of the Divide. Snow swells are expected to move up from Southwestern Colorado through Grand County up into northwestern Colorado. The first wave of snow could arrives late on November 30, and should spread showers over the majority of the mountains through Friday evening, Dec.ember 1.
Ski traffic will likely be impacted Sunday afternoon and evening along Interstate 70.
Pavement impacts are anticipated in southern Colorado as early as Thursday afternoon, but the south will see improvement this weekend as the storm’s focus shifts. Impacts will continue Saturday and Sunday, mainly along and north of US 50 where blowing and drifting snow are also a concern at higher elevations.
“After a short break from last weekend’s winter weather, it’s time for motorists to prepare for snowy conditions once again,” said John Lorme, CDOT’s director of maintenance and operations. “Pack your vehicle with extra food, water, warm clothes, blankets and necessities like medications. Safety closures may happen at any time during severe weather and if you are held up on the highway you want to be prepared.”
There will be ebbs and flows in snowfall intensity and coverage this weekend, and it will not snow heavily over one given area the whole time. However, day storm totals by Monday morning will likely be moderate to heavy throughout higher elevations, favoring the northern and central areas of western Colorado.
“Commercial motor vehicle and passenger vehicle drivers must drive for the conditions and consider the hazards before heading out on the roads,” said Lorme. “Colorado has officially entered its winter season and conditions will only get worse during future storms. Now is the perfect time for motorists to make sure their tires and vehicles are well-equipped to drive in the snow. If you’re feeling nervous about winter driving, it’s never a bad idea to take a winter driving class to freshen up your skills and feel confident on the roadways.”
Drivers are urged to “know before you go”, check road conditions on COtrip.org, and stay on top of the latest forecast information as the winter weather evolves.
