DEVIL MOUNTAIN CHRONICLES: Happy New Year, Earthlings!

I think it’s unlikely that scientists will discover intelligent life on other planets… when there is scant evidence that there’s intelligence on this planet.

To most of us, the word intelligent means: “having the capacity for thought and reason, especially to a high degree; displaying quickness of understanding, sound thought, or good judgment.”

If only more humans on planet Earth exhibited sound thought and good judgment, we as a race would be much better off; and we wouldn’t have such brainless foolishness as deep-fat-fried butter, purple Mohawks, Elmer Fudd tattoos, and “alternative facts”.

What do we expect? We’re only apes with big brains. But there’s sufficient evidence to conclude that there is at least some intelligent life here on Earth. Not all of us are among the present Zeitgeist.

Most people have the capacity for intelligent thought, but don’t take the effort to think. They rely on their politicians, scientists, and clergymen to do their thinking for them. Naturally, most folks are sheep, but they don’t always follow the same shepherd. Some are lemmings that follow their idiot leaders right off a cliff. Some reflective followers are led by smart, conscientious people who are actually looking after their flock.

It’s part of natural selection, I suppose.

The term ‘smart, conscientious people’ is a relative one. There are certain leaders that some call smart; I, for the life of me, cannot comprehend their rationale. Most people choose leaders that believe in the same philosophy or party line as theirs, but many times that philosophy turns out to be corrupt.

Having a high IQ is an extremely helpful tool, but intelligence without out compassion, honesty, fairness and respect for others is almost useless. We all know smart people who do stupid things, and history shows us that there are whole nations that have inexplicably gone criminally insane and have committed atrocious crimes against humanity. (Kinda like McDonalds introducing the Super Size concept to the world.)

They say that visitors from another solar system in our own galaxy, the Milky Way, have been vacationing on planet Earth for about 100,000 years. (Read Wendelle Stevens’ Message from the Pleiades, The Contact Notes of Eduard “Billy” Meier.) These advanced beings — that look very similar to humans; sort of like beady-eyed used car salesmen — travel light years in only the blink of an eye. They visit many planets to check up on the backward inhabitants – like us earthlings.

The good aliens want to help us.

Not long after they first arrived, they interbred with our caveman ancestors (but only the cute ones). This set us on a course to higher intelligence, but did nothing to prevent thousands of years of war and subjugation; and in that sense they failed. But they are still watching us, and some believers say that we are at a critical junction in our history where only extra terrestrials can save us.

Other people call it The Rapture.

Sometimes I feel like a space alien who’s hiding out on earth… playing drums, and occasionally writing about the strange creatures that occupy this magnificent planet. I actually feel like I’m on the outside looking in; and the more I study earthlings, the more I realize what a wacky conundrum we are.

I also see traits in humans that are quite encouraging. Most of us strive for something better in this life, or at least for our children; we excel in many fields and have built palaces of higher education around the world, spreading the word of logic and reason; we have made huge advancements in medicine so that people can live longer, enjoy more fulfilled lives, and experience less suffering; we have invented machines that make life easier, and vehicles that get us around the planet ten times faster than only a hundred years ago… and even haul us to the moon.

We are finally coming around to accepting the high concept of saving Mother Earth… and thank goodness, we are on the verge of discovering a cure for baldness!

But with all these great advancements we seem no closer to ending war, or feeding the starving, or just taking the time to try and understand each other, one person at a time. And ignorance seems to linger on, even in the most sophisticated country the planet has ever known. There are actually people who believe that “intellectuals” are a bad thing and that we should revert to dogma and superstition.

Hardly signs of intelligent life.

Some humans are naturally contentious and fight for their point of view without realizing that theirs is the “goose step” point of view. Others have grown apathetic and have given up on the human race. We must stop the fighting and never give up hope.

It seems to me that the vast universe – and the human condition – is not a matter of black and white, but of many hues of gray. Is there a possibility that there is intelligent life on other planets? Let’s hope so, and that they can somehow pull us out of this figurative black hole.

Perhaps the folks from the Pleiades are walking among us and choose not to reveal themselves at the moment. Why would they? We have a hard enough time getting along with each other. How could we be expected to get along with a bunch of freaks from another planet?

And believe me, they know how we feel about illegal aliens . . . and that we would “stand our ground.”

Happy New Year, Earthlings!
