THEATRE ARTS: Summer Season Actors Arrive at PSCA; Programs Planned for Kids and Teens

By Amy Wolfe

The professional actors arrived this week to begin rehearsals for Thingamajig Theatre Company’s production of the musicals, Bright Star, Guys & Dolls, and The SpongeBob Musical.

Costumes are being fitted, sets detailed, music and choreography rehearsed to prepare for a magical summer of live musical theatre. The summer shows and programs take place at the Pagosa Springs Center for the Arts.

Visit our website at pagosacenter.org for links to purchase season tickets and individual tickets for these wonderful shows.

Following the opening of the three summer shows, Whatchamawhozit Kids Camp begins weekdays, July 5 through July 15, 9am to 2pm and culminating in public performances of The Music Man Kids on July 16 and 17 directed by returning camp favorite, Tyler Price Robinson. The camp works with 7 to 12-year-olds (inquire about special consideration of 6 and 13-year-olds) introducing them to all aspects of theatre production. Thingamajig’s professional actors for the main stage shows work with the campers on signing, dancing, storytelling, character development, costume design, painting, and lighting while teaching them the invaluable skills of teamwork, public speaking, critical thinking, and self-confidence in a fun and active environment.

At Whatchamawhozit Kids Camp, all the art forms come together to provide an amazing experience right here in Pagosa Springs. Register your youngster at pagosacenter.org for the transformative power of theatre education. The cost of the camp is $375 and includes admission to the Wednesday, July 13 matinee performance of The Spongebob Musical which features all the camp counselors.

The opening of our Broadway in the Mountains season is only three weeks away, with Bright Star taking the stage on Friday, June 3. The award-winning collaboration of Steve Martin and Edie Brickell was inspired by a true story and their 2013 bluegrass album “Love Has Come for You”. Set in the Blue Ridge Mountains in the 1940s, with flashbacks to the 1920s, the music and script weave a story of loss and the power of love. Allie Tamburello returns to Thingamajig’s stage to perform in a dream role of her bucket list as Alice Murphy.

The musical romantic comedy of Guys & Dolls, subtitled “A Musical Fable of Broadway” will open on Friday, June 17 with familiar songs and amazing dancers. The unlikely pairing of Manhattan underworld figures with straight and narrow “dolls” is set in 1920s New York and Havana, Cuba. You will be singing along with songwriter Frank Loesser’s brilliant compositions, “Bushel and a Peck,” “If I Were a Bell” and “Luck Be a Lady.”

Opening Friday, July 1, The SpongeBob Musical will transport audiences to the underwater world of Bikini Bottom. Inspired by Nickelodeon’s long-running animated children’s cartoon, SpongeBob SquarePants, trouble is about to erupt in Bikini Bottom producing an unlikely hero. This family-friendly and fun musical is sure to delight audiences of all ages.
