Following recent reporting from Colorado Newsline that the United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) targeted Colorado for covert election monitoring in the June primary, Amanda Gonzalez, Democratic candidate for Secretary of State released the below statement outlining her commitment to fighting for Coloradans’ voting rights.
The recent reporting that President Trump and his Department of Homeland Security secretly targeted Colorado ahead of our June primary is a dangerous and unacceptable abuse of power.
Colorado has a long history of secure, safe and accessible elections, often leading the country in voter turnout statewide. Despite that, we have been squarely in the crosshairs of this administration. This weaponization of federal agencies is nothing more than a political stunt designed to intimidate Colorado voters and sow distrust in our election systems.
As Jefferson County’s Clerk and Recorder, I know firsthand how hard our election workers work to keep our elections secure and ensure every Coloradans’ voice is heard. As Secretary of State, I will not allow the federal government or bad actors to harass our communities or disrupt our elections. We will continue to use every legal tool at our disposal to block unwarranted federal interference and protect the safety of our election workers and voters.
Our democracy is at its best when participation is high and voters can elect officials that match their values. The strongest response to Trump’s craven attempt at voter intimidation is for every Colorado voter to cast their ballot in this election.
