Gardening in Pagosa Springs comes with its own unique set of rewards and challenges. With a short growing season of approximately 90 days, local gardeners frequently find themselves monitoring weather, managing wildlife, and navigating water access. However, despite these hurdles, growing fresh food in Archuleta County is fully achievable and deeply rewarding. Through dedicated community education, Healthy Archuleta is empowering local residents with the skills, confidence, and hands-on experience needed to cultivate vibrant, productive gardens.
Healthy Archuleta’s gardening programs focus on practical, hands-on learning designed specifically for our local high-altitude environment. Participants gain foundational knowledge on crucial gardening mechanics, including: soil health and preparation, how to choose the appropriate plant varieties, when to plant, overcoming the unique challenges of the mountain garden. Beyond the harvest itself, gardening offers profound personal and community benefits. Being outdoors in the fresh air provides physical exercise, a healthy dose of Vitamin D, and a natural boost to mental health.
In light of rising grocery costs, growing accessible, staple crops like potatoes, onions, and leafy greens can lighten the strain on home budgets. Above all, gardening serves as a powerful social bridge, connecting neighbors, fostering friendships, and strengthening community resilience.
September in the Garden Education Workshops
To build on these principles and help gardeners make the most of the late season, Healthy Archuleta is offering an upcoming September in the Garden Education Workshop Series. Whether you are looking to extend your autumn harvest, learn late-season garden maintenance, or prepare your beds for next spring, this three-part series offers ideal hands-on practice in a supportive setting.
The workshops will take place in the Vista Community Gardens, showcasing improvements made possible through a 2026 AARP Community Challenge grant. Archuleta is one of 750 grantees selected. The grant is supporting improvements to the Vista Lake Community Garden designed to increase accessibility, comfort, and participation for older adults and residents of all ages. Planned enhancements include upgrades that make the garden more age-friendly and welcoming, while creating opportunities for community members to engage in gardening, physical activity, social connection, and lifelong learning.
These three sessions offer an opportunity to gather outdoors, learn directly in a community garden space, and share experiences with fellow local growers. The sessions will take place on Wednesdays, September 9, 16, and 23, from 9:30 – 11am at the Vista Lake Community Production Garden. Spots for the gardening classes are limited to ensure every participant receives personalized, hands-on instruction. Interested community members are encouraged to register early.
