A new Colorado law taking effect on August 12 will require parental consent for minors to obtain motorcycle endorsements for e-motorcycles, aiming to reduce crashes among young riders. This law also mandates that riders under 18 wear helmets if their e-bike can reach speeds of 28 mph or faster.
Many parents are buying these devices for many different reasons, whether for ease of transportation, entertainment, low cost compared to a vehicle, etc.
While the law fluctuates on where you can ride each type of e-device depending on your local municipality, the onus for your child’s safety falls on you as a parent. Take every precaution to protect your kids and to help teach them to ride responsibly.
If you opt to buy an e-motorcycle, the rider must have a valid driver’s license with a motorcycle endorsement, a valid registration and proof of insurance. The minimum age for a motorcycle license in Colorado is 16. In addition, minors are required to wear a helmet.
Come August 12, a minor (anyone under the age of 18) must now have written permission from a parent or guardian to obtain a motorcycle endorsement. Previously, a minor just needed consent from anyone over the age of 21. It is believed that requiring a parent or guardian’s permission will increase the safety and education of your child and decrease the amount of traumatic incidents our youth are involved in.
As these devices become more and more popular and accessible, the number of crashes involving juveniles has increased.
