Archuleta County to Host ‘Community Conversation’ About Potential Tax Increase, Tomorrow, June 10

Join your friends and neighbors tomorrow, Wednesday, June 10 at the Pagosa Springs High School, for the fourth and final session in the ‘Community Conversations’ series, sponsored by Archuleta County Republican Party, Archuleta County Democratic Party, and the Archuleta County League of Women Voters.

This presentation and Q&A will be focused on Archuleta County’s Lodging Tax and how it could help fund various local needs, including road maintenance and improvements.

Archuleta County currently collects a 1.9% Lodging Tax from people staying in lodging facilities — hotels, motels, short-term rentals, bed&breakfast facilities — located outside the municipal limits in the unincorporated county. This includes a majority of the vacations rental — STRs — in the community.

County Manager Longinos Gonzalez will lead the discussion and explain what voters may be asked to decide this fall.

The County Lodging Tax was originally approved by County voters, to be used exclusively for tourism marketing and promotion.  Changes to Colorado law now allow counties to collect up to 6% Lodging tax and to use it to support a wider variety of needs, including affordable housing, child care, emergency services, and roads and other infrastructure.

The Archuleta Board of County Commissioners are considering a possible ballot measure for the November 2026 election.

The Town of Pagosa Springs collects a 4.9% Lodging Tax from units within the town limits, and — being a Home Rule municipality — can use their revenue for a wider range of needs. The Town Council has also discussed the possibility of increasing its Lodging Tax.

This event, on Wednesday, June 10 from 5:30 to 7:00pm will be held at Pagosa Springs High School.  The event is free and open to the public. Whether you have questions or simply want to better understand the issue, this is an opportunity to learn more and be part of the conversation.
