The Town of Pagosa Springs will implement new building requirements under the Colorado Wildfire Resiliency Code (CWRC) beginning July 1, 2026. The updated standards are designed to reduce wildfire risk and improve the safety of homes and structures in the community.
The code applies to new construction, additions over 500 square feet, and certain exterior upgrades such as roof or siding replacements. Key requirements include fire-rated roofing, ignition-resistant exterior materials, ember-resistant venting, and protected eaves and soffits.
Additional measures may include noncombustible gutters, tempered glass windows, and solid-core doors.
Residents and contractors are encouraged to review the new requirements and check their property’s wildfire risk. For more information, contact the Town’s Building Division at 970-585-8466.
As our region moves into fire season and dry season, residents are encouraged to prepare now for possible wildfire conditions, evacuations, and power outages.
A simple first step is signing up for both Town and County alerts. The Town of Pagosa Springs has a new CivicPlus alert system, and residents must re-subscribe to continue receiving Town updates, including public meetings, Town emergencies, snow routes, inclement weather, road closures, and other Town notices. You can choose which types of updates you wish to receive.
Residents should also sign up for Archuleta County’s Nixle alerts, which provide emergency alerts and public safety notifications, including wildfire and evacuation information. Signing up for both systems helps ensure you receive timely updates from the right agency.
To sign up for Town alerts, visit the Town Alerts web page, or text PagosaSprings to 38276.
To sign up for County alerts, visit local.nixle.com/register.
Residents are also encouraged to make an evacuation plan, prepare a “go bag” or 72-hour kit, keep backup batteries and chargers on hand, and ensure they have key documents, non-perishable food, water, medications, flashlights, a battery-powered AM/FM radio, and pet supplies ready. Preparing these items in advance helps ensure you can evacuate quickly and safely if needed.
