The Colorado Division of Criminal Justice, through the Office of Adult and Juvenile Justice Assistance, has opened applications for the new Deflection and Community Investment Grants, a statewide initiative designed to redirect youth away from the justice system and toward supportive, community-based services.
As established by House Bill 25-1146, the competitive grant program will fund organizations that provide trauma-informed health, development and intervention services for youth at the earliest possible point of justice system involvement.
The program operates as a pilot through June 30, 2028, with a focus on prevention, early intervention and long-term positive outcomes for young people across Colorado.
“Through data-driven investments in proven community-based efforts to support youth and prevent crime, we can, and are, making Colorado safer,” said Governor Jared Polis. “Crime has significantly dropped across the board in recent years, and these funds will build on that work by connecting kids with support to prevent crime, which is good for kids, the state and our communities.”
Approximately $2.9 million per fiscal year will be made available, contingent upon legislative appropriation. Individual awards will range from $200,000 to $1 million over the course of the grant period. Up to 10 percent of annual funding is designated specifically for Native American youth programs, ensuring targeted investment in historically underserved communities.
“This investment reflects Colorado’s commitment to meeting young people where they are and connecting them with meaningful opportunities for growth, stability and success,” said Matthew M. Lunn, director of the Colorado Division of Criminal Justice. “By supporting community-driven solutions, we can reduce justice system involvement and strengthen outcomes for youth and families.”
Eligible applicants include non- profit organizations, federally recognized tribes, tribal and Urban Indian organizations, and certain Native-led private entities. Collaborative and regional applications are encouraged, allowing multiple organizations to jointly deliver services and expand their reach.
Application period: May 4 through June 1.
• Review and selection: June.
• Award notifications: By June 30.
• Project start date: July 1.
