“Working for Racial Equality (WRE) is a local organization based in Archuleta County. The overarching mission of WRE is to expose racism and take action to stop it.
WRE has members who have personally experienced the negative impacts of racism… and members who have not. Because these two lived experiences are incredibly different, WRE meetings include 1) implementation of action items to be part of the leadership of marginalized voices and 2) education about what it means to be an ally.
WRE members examine beliefs, fears, and biases that perpetuate racism. Through education, book and article discussions, as well as personal sharing, members explore historical and current racism.
Working for Racial Equality meets on Wednesdays, 6:30-8pm, via zoom. The meetings are open to the public. To get more information and the zoom link, please email workingforracialequality@gmail.com
Book Club
Wednesday, March 23, 6:30 – 8:00pm
We are reading and discussing Ceremony, by Leslie Marmon Silko. Written in 1977, Ceremony tells the story of a WWII veteran, Tayo, who is returning home to the Laguna Pueblo and struggling to cure himself of his mental anguish. Combining prose and poetry, Ceremony interweaves the individual story of Tayo and the collective story of his people. For information on how to join us, please contact workingforracialequality@gmail.com.
Archuleta Food Summit
Saturday, April 9, 10:00am – 04:30pm
Food security and food equity are critical issues related to overall racial and systemic equity. Join Healthy Archuleta for its inaugural Regional Food Summit. “The food summit brings together diverse food system stakeholders including community members who purchase, prepare and eat food to find opportunities to leverage food policy in support of a shared vision for both our region and for Colorado.” Events take place at the CSU Extension Building (off Hwy 84 – Archuleta County Fairgrounds). All are welcome! Admission is free; please complete the registration form in English or in Spanish by no later than March 24, 2022.
In honor of the Archuleta Food Summit, we are encouraging people to submit stories of personal experiences with environmental and food equity issues. One goal of the Food Summit is to highlight “the stories and experiences of local food heroes who have stepped up along the food chain—chefs, farmers, growers, truckers, meat cutters, grocery store clerks—to help their neighbors in need.” You can submit a story by clicking this link.
