Town Trail Project Improves Recreational Connectivity

Walk, bike, ride or run on the newly completed multi-purpose Hermosa Trail, which is an extension of the River Walk. The path extends east from Town Park along the south side of Hermosa Street, through Cotton Hole Park and up to the Hwy 160/1st Street intersection.

The ADA-compliant trail provides access to the newly acquired Cotton Hole Park, which was purchased by the Town in 2017 to ensure public access to the San Juan River in perpetuity.

The design includes a “lollipop” turnaround at the end of Hermosa Street to allow for emergency access and drop off/pick up and provides for traffic circulation at this dead-end street. Planning for the project began in 2019 and included public input that helped determine the overall design and location of the trail.

Landscaping, signage and additional amenities such as benches and bear-safe trash containers will be added in the spring.

This project came in under budget at an estimated total cost of $740,000. The Town will be reimbursed 47.79% of that cost – or approximately $350,000 – thanks to a Colorado State Trails grant.

The Town appreciates the work of contractors Strohecker Asphalt, Concrete Connections, and Davis Engineering on this project and residents’ patience on Hermosa Street during construction.

We hope the community enjoys this new trail extension; stay tuned for more pedestrian and bike connections in the future!
