Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad Resumes Full Service July 31

One of the most beloved steam train rides in America will return to full operation to close out the busy summer and in time for the popular fall season. On July 31, 2021, the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad (C&TSRR) resumes motorcoach service making train trips that run the full 64 miles between Chama NM and Antonito CO possible once again.

With COVID restrictions, the depot-to-depot trip by train with a motorcoach segment had to be suspended. Instead, the railroad could only offered its “all train” round trips from Chama NM to Osier station with a lunch stop and return by train to Chama; and Antonito CO trips to Osier Station with a lunch stop and return by train to Antonito. (These “All Aboard” all train trips that run to the midpoint of Osier Station and back will continue to be offered.)

“We are delighted that we are once again able to offer the highest and longest steam train ride in the nation,” said Scott Gibbs, interim CEO/president of the C&TS. “Judged three times by USA Today as the ‘best train ride in America,’ the full through trips with motorcoach allow passengers to experience all that the C&TSRR offers – from Cumbres Pass at 10,015 feet to two tunnels, high trestles over roaring rivers, a ride along the lip of Toltec Gorge, scenic views, and a hot lunch at Osier station.”

Passengers who have already purchased tickets have been given the first opportunity to change their plans from the round-trips from Chama or Antonito to Osier and back to instead ride all 64 miles between the two towns. Those ticket holders will be able to reschedule and add the motorcoach option for an additional $17.50, depending on space availability.

Built in 1880 as part of the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad, the Cumbres & Toltec is owned by the states of Colorado and New Mexico, who stepped up in 1970 to preserve 64-miles of this important and scenic railroad to showcase steam railroading to future generations. Now recognized as a National Historic Landmark, the non-profit railroad offers the highest, longest and most authentic steam railroad rides in North America.
