DEVIL MOUNTAIN CHRONICLES: A Refuge in Aspen Springs

Springtime has finally graced us with her majestic splendor. The valley bellow basks in the morning sunlight and out toward the misty horizon, Chimney Rock stands sentinel. Alone on the deck I sip coffee and breathe in the crisp air, admiring all that is before me.

This is our sanctuary.

In 1998 Jayebird discovered this property, high on an enchanted hill in the midst of Aspen Springs: a wild domain covered in ponderosa and juniper. She was captivated by the magnificent views and the peaceful setting. We cleared the two lots and erected a home atop Cerro Escondido, our hideaway hill. The deer, bears, foxes, Abert’s squirrels, Steller’s jays, red-tailed hawks and golden eagles reluctantly accepted us into their midst.

We have found safe haven in the storm and a place in which to grow old.

And to think – just two days ago ‒ I was considering leaving this magical realm for places unknown. I have my brother across the road, and trusted friends and neighbors on this hill. This is our home and it is our last stop on our earthly journey. When I die, spread my ashes on this land; and when you hear the wind gently blowing through the pines, it is my voice, singing to you from afar.

Be well.
