ESSAY: Two Historic Floods in Two Weeks… Surely, We’re Good for the Next 200 Years…

Apparently, Mother Nature decided Pagosa Springs was overdue for a thorough washing. After two significant “100-year” floods in just two weeks, we’re hoping she’s satisfied and that we’ve met our flood quota for at least another 200 years!

(A little humor helps, even during difficult times. And these have certainly been challenging days for our community.)

The storms have left their mark on homes, businesses, roads, and infrastructure throughout our area. For some, the disruption has been relatively minor. For others, the losses and uncertainty are heartbreaking.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the families whose homes, belongings have been affected, parents reassuring their children, and business owners facing unexpected hardships. Behind every account of flood damage is a personal story deserving of compassion and support.

Yet, amid these challenges, we’re witnessing something remarkable: the true character of Pagosa Springs.

Neighbors are helping neighbors. First responders, law enforcement, road crews, equipment operators, utility workers, volunteers, and local businesses have stepped forward with extraordinary generosity. Whether working long hours, providing shelter and meals, or simply lending a helping hand, their contributions remind us what makes this community special.

To everyone who has helped, thank you. Your kindness and determination reflect the pioneering spirit upon which Southwest Colorado was built.

Recovery will take time, but I’m confident Pagosa Springs will emerge stronger, more connected, and even more appreciative of the people who call this place home, and the visitors we share this special place with.

And as autumn gives way to winter, we have much to anticipate! Fresh powder at Wolf Creek, snow-covered San Juan peaks, steaming hot springs, cozy restaurants, welcoming shops, and the warmth of a genuine mountain community await.

To our second-home owners, longtime visitors, and those discovering Pagosa Springs for the first time, we warmly invite you to be sure to include us in your winter plans. Come experience our magnificent mountains, the charm of our town, and the remarkable spirit of its people.

The scenery and recreation may bring you to Pagosa Springs, but it’s the people, their generosity, genuineness, and the unique character of this community that will bring you back.

We look forward to welcoming you this winter!
