The CDOT and WW Clyde team have been in the Pagosa Springs community for almost two years now. Many of our team members relocated to the area to be part of this important project. We’ve gotten to know you, we frequent the restaurants and businesses here and want you to know that we’ll be standing with you as the town and impacted areas around Pagosa Springs rebuild from this flooding incident.
After waters receded, work zone inspections were completed. The project team has reported that US 160 and new concrete throughout downtown did not sustain significant damage. The excavated open areas on several of the open work zones will need to dry out before work continues at these locations. If you have specific project related concerns don’t hesitate to reach out to the project team.
Additionally, CDOT remains committed to providing you information and updates on all the highways impacted in the surrounding areas. For affected highway locations and routes outside of the project work zone you’re encouraged to continue visiting COTrip or contact CDOT’s customer service by phone 970-385-1423.
Due to the increased water, milling and paving operations will be pushed back a week or two. The forecast continues to call for inclement weather later this week, all project work is weather dependent. Crews will work weekends (including Sundays) as needed especially when work cannot be completed during the weekdays, due to inclement weather.
First Street – is now open to two-way traffic. The north side of 1st Street remains closed.
5th Street intersection – Starting October 26, 5th Street is closed for the Town of Pagosa Springs to continue geothermal utility work and intersection paving for the coming week(s). Alternative delivery access for businesses on 5th Street will be through the liquor store parking lot. Crews will be continuing utility work at this location as well as planned asphalt paving operations as a part of the Town of Pagosa Springs work.
6th Street intersection – Closed until US 160 lanes are paved west of McCabe Creek.
7th Street Intersection – Crews are prepping the southside of the 7th Street intersection for paving operations this week if weather permits. Please note that pedestrians and vehicles should utilize 5th and Lewis and 8th Streets as alternatives to cross US 160.
8th to 10th Streets – The milling and paving schedule for the southside of 8th – 10th Streets has been moved back to the week of November 9. 8th Street will remain open until the south side of 7th is re-opened, at which point, 8th Street will be closed.
Pedestrian Safety
Watch Where You Walk! Pedestrian crosswalks are open at 4th, 7th, and 8th Streets as an alternative to access businesses along Lewis Street or anywhere on the 400 block. Our team continues to see pedestrians, not practicing good safety measures, jumping barricades and crossing US 160. Our work zone is extremely active in several locations and we want to keep everyone safe!
Many of the newly poured storm water drains responded well to the increase in water from the flooding near US 160. Curb, gutter and sidewalks from 1st Street to the 400 block on the project channelized the water as they were designed to do.
US 160 Piedra Road & Harman Park Intersection Improvements
Harman Park & Piedra Road – Work continues at this intersection, with work hours between 9am-3pm daily. Given current weather conditions, drivers can expect work 7 days a week. We ask that drivers slow down and please allow extra time to get through the work zone. Safety benefits of this work includes pedestrian safety upgrades and ADA accessibility improvements.
Enhancements to the intersection include:
Removal of existing islands to be replaced with expanded islands to include ADA accessible ramps.
Installation of new sidewalks north and south of the intersection.
Signal enhancements to include pedestrian count-down lights and push buttons
Safety benefits on this project include pedestrian safety upgrades and ADA accessibility improvements.
Traffic Impacts
Working hours are Monday through Saturday, 9am to 3pm.
One lane and shoulder closures are to be expected around the intersections.
Plan for possible traffic delays of up to 15 minutes as crews complete the necessary work.
CDOT combined this intersection upgrade work with the current US 160 Pagosa Springs reconstruction project to capitalize on the efficiency of having the WW Clyde team already in place and familiar with the infrastructure and stakeholders in Pagosa Springs. CDOT and its contractor appreciate the continued patience and cooperation of businesses and the public as the project team works to safely complete this important improvement project.
