Dear Archuleta School District Community,
The historic flooding our community has experienced since Thursday has been devastating for many of our families, neighbors, and friends. Some have lost their homes, others have experienced significant property damage or displacement, and many are facing uncertainty about what comes next. Our hearts are with everyone impacted, and we are deeply grateful to the first responders, emergency personnel, and community members who have worked tirelessly to keep people safe and support those in need.
We know that recovery will take time and that the impacts of this flooding will be felt long after the waters recede. As we begin that process, Archuleta County officials have advised us that conditions are safe for schools to reopen today, Monday.
Families should make the decision that is safest for them. Just like during winter weather, we understand that road conditions and individual circumstances vary across our district. Parents and guardians may choose to keep their students home or bring them to school later in the day when conditions improve. Students who remain home due to flooding-related concerns will have their absences excused.
Bus routes and transportation impacts: Please review the specific bus route changes outlined here. (Routes 2, 4, 7, 9, and 11 impacted). Even on routes without planned changes, families should anticipate delays and allow extra time tomorrow morning. We appreciate your patience and flexibility as our transportation team navigates changing road conditions and works to get students to school safely. And if your family has been displaced and needs temporary or longer-term transportation arrangements, please contact us at 970-264-0392 ext 9600.
Our decision to reopen schools reflects both the guidance of local officials that it is safe to do so and our understanding that returning to familiar routines, supportive relationships, safe environments, and a sense of normalcy can be an important part of recovery for students, staff, and families. Please continue to prioritize your family’s safety, and know that we will approach the days ahead with flexibility, compassion, and a commitment to supporting our entire school community.
Sincerely,
Rick Holt
Superintendent
Archuleta School District
