LPEA Warns of Scam Emails, Phone Calls, Visitors

La Plata Electric Association (LPEA) has received reports of a scam targeting our members.

Please be on high alert for suspicious calls, emails, or visitors claiming to represent LPEA. Local residents have received phone calls from people who claimed to be LPEA staff, stating that the member’s electricity payments are overdue. These callers may send methods to make payments, such as barcodes, and may provide information including the names of authorized persons on the account to appear legitimate.

Remember: LPEA will never:

  • Show up at your home or business to demand immediate payment.

  • Ask you to pay with pre-paid debit cards, barcodes, cryptocurrencies, or money transfer apps.

  • Use aggressive or threatening tactics to collect payment.

If you receive a suspicious call, email, or visit about your electricity account:

  • Do not share personal or financial information.

  • Hang up the phone or walk away.

  • Contact LPEA directly at 970-247-5786 or msr@lpea.coop to verify your account status.

Your safety and security are our priority.  Stay alert and help us stop these scams in our community.
