Remote Control Airplane Event Will Benefit Wings Early Childhood Center, Tomorrow

Airplanes will be flying high tomorrow, Saturday morning, August 23, at the Pagosa Lakes Property Owners Association (PLPOA) Clubhouse.

Remote control planes, that is.

Members of the High Country Remote Control Club of Pagosa Springs will show off their planes and helicopters at the Wings in the Wild fundraiser benefiting Wings Early Childhood Center.

Club members have been preparing for a few weeks to exhibit their planes, and they are looking forward to delighting kids and grownups alike this weekend.

A short walk from the clubhouse, the club has a tiny dedicated airstrip designed for these grown men to fly their big-boy toys. If you have never seen these complicated (and pricey) contraptions in the air, you are in for a real treat. The miniature aircraft, controlled from a distance using a transmitter, fly fast and high using the same aerodynamic principles as full-size aircraft. Flying them requires dexterity, quick reflexes and an understanding of aerodynamic principles. It also demands intricate coordination be- tween pilots to keep their planes out of another’s flight path. Enthusiasts say flying these planes is the next best experience to being a pilot.

Mark on your calendar and meet us at the PLPOA Clubhouse, 230 Port Ave. tomorrow, Saturday, from 8am to 1pm Enjoy a morning filled with family fun, including tethered hot air balloon rides, a root beer float stand, face painting, food, family games and more. Bid on special storytime book baskets at WingsEarlyChildhood.org and at the event.

The Wings end-of-summer fundraiser helps Wings Early Childhood Center provide high-quality child care and tuition subsidies.
