On May 7 and 10, the TARA Food Pantry will be holding a plant sale from 9am to 1pm.
The TARA Food Pantry is located in the lower level of the TARA Community Center at 333 Milton Lane in Arboles. This event will serve as a fundraiser for the TARA Food Pantry.
In addition to helping out the TARA Food Pantry, it will also help families become self-sufficient in growing their own vegetables. One of the goals of the pantry is to “Stay Happy — Eat Healthy.” The joy of growing your own food can be very gratifying and fun.
The Economic Research Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates food prices will increase by 2.2 percent in 2025. With the rising cost of food, this will assist families with more quality, healthy food options while saving a substantial amount of money by growing their own food.
Since the end of January there has been an executive order to freeze all existing and future federal funding. In 2024, the TARA Food Pantry depended on these grants and others along with donations for sustainability. Therefore, the pantry is looking to be creative to help keep the shelves full of food for the community. The plant sale is one of the ways that will help with purchasing healthy foods for local families.
At this time the TARA Food Pantry serves between 65 and 70 families per week.
Some of the plant choices are: tomatoes, peppers, squash, honeydew, pumpkins, garlic and more. other choices are aloe vera, spider plants, chick and hens, salvia, asparagus fern, creeping Charlie, mint, wandering Jew, amaranth, hollyhocks, African violets, cactus, marigolds, sunflowers, moon flowers, pothos, zebra haworthia and much more.
It would be a good place to pick up a Mother’s Day gift also.
In addition to plants, there will be Arboles homegrown compost for sale along with containers and seeds.
