The Upper San Juan Watershed Enhancement Partnership (WEP) is in the very early stages of planning the implementation of their first project — the Pagosa Gateway Project (PGP).
This project will address the ecological and structural needs of approximately 2 miles of the San Juan River, upstream of the Town of Pagosa Springs.
The PGP will implement a series of interventions, including the creation of low-flow channels, promotion of bank stabilization, riparian vegetation and fish passage, as well as the removal of hazardous streambank materials to increase the resiliency of this section of the San Juan River and its ability to support aquatic life and diverse water users. A preliminary plan on the design of placement of the interventions will be discussed at an open house the WEP will be hosting on Thursday, May 23 at the Ross Aragon Community Center from 5:30 to 7 p.m.
The open house will also be an opportunity to meet the contractor that is designing and implementing the project, learn details about the project, meet WEP representatives and project partners, and provide valuable feedback.
The WEP strongly encourages all in our community, residents and visitors alike, to attend and provide written input on how PGP implementation will address the needs of the water user group(s) you are most interested in. We hope to see you there. Frito chili pie will be provided.
The WEP strives to develop cooperative solutions to further the responsible use, management and sustainability of streams within the Upper San Juan River Basin for the benefit of the community and the health of the river’s ecosystem. The WEP was incorporated as a Colorado nonprofit in 2023 to steward implementation of identified projects. The WEP is awaiting designation of 501c3 status.
