As a member congregation in the Unitarian Universalist (UU) Association, the Pagosa UU Fellowship often asks questions such as:
“What are people of faith, people of conscience, and people who want and work for liberation, to do?”
This question, and the following statement, come from another member organization, namely The Church of the Larger Fellowship.
“We do what we can where we are… Lean into community and focus your energy on your friends and neighbors.”
This fourth Sunday, January 25, at 10:30am, the Pagosa Fellowship will engage in Action Sunday as we have been doing for a year. As a small, lay-led congregation, we engage with resources that strengthen our capacity to question and confront the injustices we see in the world. Part of the action is to educate ourselves as we continue the book group reading “Social Change Now: A Guide for Reflection and Connection” by Deepa Iyer.
This workbook-style read focuses on roles we all participate in when doing the work of building beloved community. Iyer lays out 10 roles that individuals or organizations play, and a how-to of the building blocks for taking part in actions. The roles are: frontline responders, visionaries, builders, caregivers, disrupters, healers, storytellers, guides, weavers and experimenters.
This week we will explore each role and name where we might fit into it.
Looking ahead at the scheduled reading for the book, our plan is: January and February will be “Introduction” and “Mapping Social Change Roles” sections, and we will finish up the fourth Sunday in March with “For Now, and For the Long Haul” section.
Join us any of these Sundays, as this reflection and discussion group will provide enough content to be meaningful even if you were unable to read the book.
We also make our space available for adjacent groups to meet in our Community Hub. The Tara Meditation Group held Sundays from 4:30 to 6pm, Qigong practice on Monday afternoons, and the Wise and Wakeful Circle are on-going. There will be no Circle the fourth Saturday this month. Check out PagosaUU.org for our current monthly newsletter and more.
The fellowship space is located in the Greenbriar Plaza, Unit B-15, 301 N. Pagosa Blvd., on the north side facing the Pagosa Peak. We celebrate diversity and foster a spiritual home for those wishing to “Make Friends, Grow in Spirit and Do Good,” and gather together in active hope.
