Healthy communities thrive on collaboration between healthcare providers and the community, recognizing diverse perspectives and cultural backgrounds. To foster this essential understanding, Healthy Archuleta is pleased to announce an upcoming Cultural Competency & Integrated Mental Health Training facilitated by respected psychiatrist Dr. Jose Canaca. This session will take place this coming Monday, October 13 from 5:30 – 6:30pm on Zoom.
Dr. Jose Canaca, a Board-Certified Psychiatrist and Associate Professor at the University of New Mexico, brings extensive experience working with vulnerable populations in rural communities across Latin America and New Mexico, including Native American, Hispanic/Latino communities, and immigrants. He is a leader in cultural psychiatry lectures at UNM and has collaborated with COMISCA.
This professional development session aims to enhance ongoing intercultural development, self-reflection, and understanding of cultural contexts, particularly within Archuleta County’s rich Hispanic and Latino communities. The training will emphasize cultural humility, encouraging healthcare providers to view each patient as unique, shaped by experiences such as heritage, migration, socioeconomic status, and family.
Through active listening, valuing cultural knowledge, and fostering collaborative relationships, the session will highlight how to honor traditions, build trust, reduce disparities, and ultimately improve the quality of care for Latino individuals facing mental health challenges. A key focus will also be on addressing mental health stigma within the Hispanic and Latino community to encourage open discussion and seeking help.
Healthcare professionals interested in attending this vital training are encouraged to RSVP to fsfearchuleta@gmail.com.
