Beth Hendrix, the executive director of the Colorado League of Women Voters, visited Pagosa Springs recently, and met with a group of citizens interested in starting a League of Women Voters in Archuleta County.
Hendrix emphasized that the League of Women Voters is nonpartisan, meaning it neither supports nor opposes candidates for office at any level of government.
She added that all members are entitled and encouraged to influence policy through advocacy.
Recent legislative issues the Colorado League has supported include automatic voter registration, restored voting rights for parolees, and equal pay for equal work. The Colorado League also has supported the proposed National Popular Vote Interstate Compact to ensure that the winner of the Electoral College vote for president is also the winner of the national popular vote.
The new League of Women Voters of Archuleta County is forming now. As a nonpartisan grassroots organization, the local league’s mission is to support citizens of Archuleta County in election participation in our democracy.
Everyone is invited to the inaugural meeting at 5:30pm on September 29 at Elkwood Manor, 85 Easy St.
Archuleta County Commissioner Veronica Medina will speak. Men are welcome, too. The League is committed to engaging all individuals, households, communities and policymakers in creating a more perfect democracy.
