Archuleta School District opened a new preschool program at Pagosa Springs Elementary School at the start of the 2025–26 school year, and there are still spots available for interested families. The program is designed for children ages 3–4 and includes a developmental curriculum, outdoor play, and play-based learning.

“Launching preschool in our district is a major celebration,” said Superintendent Rick Holt. “Anyone in our elementary school can tell you how critical it is for children to build a strong foundation before starting kindergarten. This district investment in our youngest learners is important for setting our kids up for success throughout their entire education.”

The class is limited to 16 students, with some seats reserved for students in special education. Preschool hours run from 8:00am to 3:30pm, with extended care available from 7:15–8:00am and 3:30–4:30pm.

Colorado’s Universal Preschool (UPK) program may cover all or part of the tuition. Children who are 4 years old by September 1 are eligible for up to 30 hours of free preschool per week. Children who are 3 years old with qualifying factors may be eligible for up to 10 hours per week.

“This program is about meeting families where they are,” said Elementary School Principal Kelly Vining. “With small class sizes, extended hours, and financial support through UPK, we’re making preschool accessible and responsive to community needs.”

Enrollment is first come, first served, and space is limited. Next year, depending on enrollment needs, ASD may expand the program to two classrooms.

Families can enroll online here. For questions, call (970) 264-2229 or visit the school at 141 South 10th Street.
