The Town of Pagosa Springs was recently notified that it is the recipient of a $12,000 grant from Wildfire Adapted Partnership (WAP) in Durango to fund crucial fire mitigation work on Reservoir Hill. This substantial award more than doubles the area previously scheduled for treatment in 2025 — from 8 acres to approximately 20 acres — marking a major step forward in the Town’s commitment to wildfire preparedness and community safety.
The grant will enable wildfire mitigation efforts across 20 acres of Reservoir Hill, a well-known recreation area and ecological asset in the heart of Pagosa Springs. This expanded treatment will help reduce hazardous fuels, enhance defensible space, and promote forest health—all essential components in protecting both the environment and community infrastructure from the increasing threat of wildfires. Additionally, the Town has committed to maintaining these fire-safe conditions for a minimum of five years following treatment—demonstrating its long-term dedication to wildfire resilience.
“This grant allows us to significantly expand our fire mitigation efforts on Reservoir Hill this year,” said Darren Lewis, Parks and Recreation Director for the Town of Pagosa Springs. “With the support of Wildfire Adapted Partnership, we can take proactive measures to protect our community and public lands.”
As climate change continues to intensify fire seasons across the West, Pagosa Springs’ efforts represent a proactive model for small towns looking to make a big impact with strategic mitigation and smart funding.
