The second Archuleta Food Summit was held this past Saturday. Over 20 local experts gathered to speak with our community about local food production and other aspects of the local food system. In honor of such a large gathering about putting the land to bountiful use, it rained. Could nature have provided more support than this?
More than just wonderful people, food, and conversation, the Food Summit made its call to action: plant your garden, buy locally sourced fruits, vegetables, meat, and eggs.
Don’t worry, even if you were not available last Saturday, there are still opportunities to learn how to grow better; there are still many plant starts available for your garden; and the Farmers Market has a new location: Tennyson Sculpture Garden (Opening day is July 6).
Novice and aspiring gardeners can join the monthly meeting of the Mountain High Garden Club and contact the Pagosa Springs Community Garden, or, for Pagosa Lakes residents, there is the Vista Lakes Community Garden for upcoming educational activities and events.
Healthy Archuleta will also be hosting mini workshops on water systems, composting, soil management, container gardening, and harvesting. Stay tuned and/or if you want to be informed, please send us an email at fsfearchuleta@gmail.com to be added to our list.
Many residents joined us last Saturday and we hope many more will join us this growing season to plant gardens and produce more fresh food for themselves and their neighbors. Please visit Healthy Archuleta’s website for more information: www.foodcoalition4archuleta.org.
Thank you to everyone who came, our amazing volunteers, and to our community experts who shared!
