By Helen Wilkinson

The Scholarship Committee is excited to share with everyone the recipients of the 2023 Durango Elks Lodge Scholarships.

We will be allotting twelve local scholarships and one state-level award.

Olivia Rome, a Durango High School student, will receive a Colorado Elks Association Scholarship Grant. The $1,000 grant, awarded by the Durango Elks Lodge, is made possible by the Colorado Elks Association.

The following students will receive $1,000 scholarship awards from Durango Lodge #507:

From Pagosa Springs High School:
Hannah Rockensock, Noah Slingerland, Kaleb Johnson, Kyle Marotta

From Durango High School:
Shelby Zuber, Katelyn Bowie, Baden Dickson

From Bayfield High School:
Bailey Martinez

From Ignacio High School:
Anaya Lucero, Rachal Goodwin

Abria Thayer, Bayfield High School, will receive the Fred Zimmerman Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $1,000. This scholarship, for a student pursuing a vocational/technical degree, is in honor of long serving Elk member Fred Zimmerman who chaired the scholarship committee for many years. This year’s recipient Abria will be studying cosmetology at the Aveda Institute in Provo, Utah.

David Ashbaugh, graduating from Pagosa Springs High School, will be receiving the $1,000 Durango Elks Lodge Veteran’s Scholarship (made possible by the Durango Elks Lodge Veterans’ Committee); he is well deserving as the daughter of two military parents and one veteran grandparent. He will be attending Southern Utah University in Cedar City where he will be majoring in rotary wing aviation.

Finally, we would like to acknowledge Pagosa Springs High School student Hannah Rockensock who was named a state finalist in the Elks National Foundation’s Most Valuable Student Competition. Way to go, Hannah!

We will be recognizing the students at an awards ceremony at the Durango Elks Lodge on Monday, May 15, beginning at 5:45pm. Feel free to stop by and meet some of the students.

We believe we chose well-deserving students for our awards!

The scholarship committee of Durango Elks Lodge #507 congratulates all 2023 graduating seniors and invites upcoming 2024 seniors to apply online for the Elks National Foundation Most Valuable Student Scholarship Contest. Applications are available in the fall and open to all seniors.
