Rotary Club Invites Scholarship Applications

If high school seniors have not started thinking about how to fund their schooling in the fall, it is a great time to begin. Many students are eligible for different types of scholarships, and one of them may be from the Pagosa Springs Rotary Club.

Applications must be returned by March 15.

Each year, a committee of Rotary members reads through scholarship applications and selects worthy students. In many years, these scholarships have totaled up to $20,000. As of 2022, the Pagosa Springs Rotary Club has awarded scholarships to 192 graduates of Pagosa Springs high schools, totaling $518,125.

These scholarships are not limited solely to those attending Pagosa Springs High School. They are open to students at GOAL, those being home-schooled or those GED graduates who have completed or are planning to finish their GED by spring. The scholarships are available to any senior who plans on attending a college or university or vocational school in the fall. There are separate scholarship forms for those planning on a four-year school and those looking at vocational schools.

Scholarship applications were provided to the high school in mid-January and can be emailed to those students who do not go to Pagosa Springs High School. These scholarship applications have a hard deadline of March 15.

Scholarships are based on several criteria, including financial need, scholastic accomplishment, extracurricular activities, personal interview, letters of recommendation, personal essay and resume quality.

The Pagosa Springs Rotary Club was chartered in May 1979, and has approximately 75 local members. Throughout the year, various events are held in the community in order to raise the monies for these scholarships. In addition, several Rotary members contribute to help seniors pay for further education. Applications can be picked up at Pagosa Spring High School or by emailing megwempe@hotmail.com.

They can be returned by dropping them off at the counselor at Pagosa Springs High School.

If you do not attend Pagosa Springs High School, please make individual arrangements by sending an email to megwempe@hotmail.com. Please use the subject line “Rotary scholarship” to be sure it’s seen.

We look forward to reading these scholarship applications, so we hope you (or your senior) will apply.
