The eleventh annual Aztec Highland Games & Celtic Festival will be taking place on October 2 and 3, 2021 in Riverside Park in Aztec, NM. This family-friendly cultural event will bring a taste of the Scottish Highlands to the southwest featuring the heavy Celtic athletic competitions, Highland dance competitions, bag pipe band exhibitions, live Celtic music, vendors, and Clan tents. It’s definitely worth the trip – because where else can you eat authentic haggis (Scottish national food) and fry bread on the same day?
“This event has all the tastes of Scotland and the British Isles you may be craving but in our beautiful New Mexico sunshine!” says, Christa Chapman, committee chair for the event. “If you haven’t been to the Four Corners or it’s been a while it’s definitely a good excuse to make the trip. Then while you are here you can visit the Four Corners Monument or the Aztec Ruins National Monument. This is an large outdoor venue and we will be compiling with current New Mexico state public health orders that weekend, so it should be a safe and fun time.”
For the Celtic music fans out there, Big Paddy, hailing from Denver, will be headlining the music festival portion. For the sports fans, come watch the heavy Celtic athletic competitions featuring the caber toss (you know, where they throw telephone poles), the Braemar Stone (like it sounds, they throw big rocks), and other feats of strength and agility. And for those that like knees, come for the kilts!
Tickets are $15 for the day, $20 for the weekend, or $17 for the day at the gate and $22 for the weekend. Kids under 12 are free, student/military/senior discounts are available, and leashed dogs are welcome. Buy online at www.AztecHighlandGames.com or at the gate at Riverside Park, 500 S Lightplant Rd.
