September is National Preparedness Month, and living in Archuleta County means being ready for conditions that can change quickly.
We are surrounded by beautiful high mountain peaks, but our geography also means Pagosa Springs has only three primary routes out of town. During an emergency, those roads can quickly become snow-packed, reduced to one lane or closed altogether. Having a family emergency plan is more than a convenience — it is essential.
One of the most important steps you can take is signing up for local Nixle alerts. Text our ZIP code, 81147, to 888777 to receive local emergency notifications and important updates. These alerts may include information about hazards, road closures, emergency shelters, and resources for people and pets, including large animals.
Before traveling during a storm, visit COTrip.org for current Colorado road conditions, closures and travel alerts. COtrip also offers a convenient mobile app for Android and iPhone. During an evacuation, always follow the routes and instructions provided by local emergency officials.
There are several other ways your household can prepare:
Pack a “go bag” with medications, glasses, extra clothing, water, snacks and other essentials.
Prepare supplies for your pets, including medications, food, leashes, halters,carriers and familiar bedding.
Write down important phone numbers instead of relying entirely on your phone.
Choose a trusted contact outside your household, and make sure every family member carries that person’s phone number in a wallet or another safe place.
Keep extra supplies in your vehicle, including blankets, warm clothes, appropriate footwear, water, snacks, an ice scraper and a shovel. These items can be critical if you must spend unexpected time in your vehicle during a storm.
