Investigations have exposed fraudulent practices, including individuals accepting fees to register vehicles, unauthorized brokers booking and reselling driver license office appointments for profit, and applicants paying third parties to fraudulently complete written knowledge tests.
Starting every transaction at mydmv.colorado.gov is the only way to ensure personal data and payments remain secure, rather than using third-party “service” scams that claim they can help Coloradans get verified documents.
Fraudulent third parties often attempt to charge unsuspecting customers inflated prices for essential services that the state provides for free or at a fixed, low cost.
“Our official new online portal is designed to offer convenience without compromising security,” DMV Senior Director Electra Bustle said. “Convenience should never come at the cost of integrity. We urge all residents to use only official DMV channels to book appointments and access information to ensure they are dealing with the correct source.”
To protect against exploitation, the DMV reminds the public that essential services are free or low-cost when accessed directly, including:
- Scheduling an appointment at a DMV office: Customers should never pay a third party to secure a time slot. To ensure you are receiving official services and materials, always navigate directly through the official DMV website.
- Registering your vehicle: Never go through a third party to register your vehicle. Customers can visit a local county motor vehicle office, go online, or locate one of the many CO MV Express kiosks across Colorado.
- Taking online knowledge tests: Colorado offers the convenience of taking driver knowledge tests online for a small, standard fee via the official @Home service.
