“Gratitude and Breaking Bread” is the theme at the Pagosa Unitarian Universalist (UU) Fellowship this Sunday, November 16. Our presenter, Julie Loar, will offer wisdom and inspiration in her compelling way.
Loar explains, “The idea of breaking bread is a phrase and tradition with deep roots. The act symbolizes unity, hospitality, and shared connection, often used to foster bonds between people. The act of physically breaking bread together is a powerful gesture of sharing, whether for a casual meal or a significant celebration. The phrase and practice originate from ancient times when people would literally break a loaf of bread apart to share it, often as a sign of hospitality, covenant, or trust.”
Loar is a favored speaker both locally and beyond. She is the multiple award-winning author of eight books and dozens of articles, and previously served on the board of the Fellowship and many community organizations. We are honored to have Julie Loar along with musical offerings by NewFangle, namely Dave Pettus, Susan Kuhns and Dave McNamee, as we gather in community for conscious giving of thanks through ritual and song.
We will also share in the ancient ritual of breaking bread together. All are invited to bring a familial tradition, ancestral, or a favorite/necessary dietary offering of bread for a UU-style bread communion as we experience this ancient practice.
Our Sunday morning programs begin at 10:30am, and all are invited to stay for coffee hour after the service. We hold space for a variety of topics to engage and deepen to grow in spirit, build beloved community and do good in the world. Our Community Hub is a place for groups to gather and grow, such as weekly meditation practice from 5:30-7:00pm each Sunday evening, and other groups throughout the month. The UU Fellowship is one of the faith partners of Pagosa Pride and will provide space for a short program for Transgender Day of Remembrance, Thursday, November 20, beginning at 6:00pm.
