The Archuleta County Road & Bridge Department will begin imperative work at the intersection of North Pagosa and Martinez Creek, 3.6 miles North of HWY 160, near the Gate 5 recreational area parking lot. Imminent failure of the culvert is cause for the emergency project.
A long winter followed by extensive rainfall caused water to pool east of the culvert early last spring. Water began to permeate areas around the culvert piping causing erosion and separation at the joint. This in turn caused sagging in the roadway which worsened over the summer months.
Crews will complete a full replacement, installing two, 6 ft. by 80 ft. culverts. Due to the time of year, asphalt will not be installed in the area until next spring.
This area of North Pagosa will be closed completely. Residents can expect a detour rerouting drivers to North Pagosa and Piedra Rd./CR 600 where they can then reconnect to North Pagosa via Mission Drive. The route is opposite that of the previous Piedra Rd./CR600 detour. This project is not expected to exceed three weeks and has anticipated completion by the end of November.
Damaged culverts and impending sagging roadways can lead to loss of vehicle control, transverse cracking, and total road collapse. The safety of County residents is first and foremost. The County wishes to thank all constituents for their patience during this unexpected but necessary project.
