LPEA FIRE UPDATE: Public Safety Power Shutoffs Implemented in Pagosa Springs

La Plata Electric Association (LPEA) activated precautionary Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS) at 2:25 PM today in response to the Oak Fire. Approximately 192 members are currently without power as the fire threatens critical electric infrastructure in the area. LPEA CEO Chris Hansen was on site today, collaborating directly with LPEA crews to oversee response efforts and ensure the safety of the community and utility assets.
“The safety of our members and the protection of vital infrastructure remain our top priorities,” said Hansen. “We are working closely with emergency partners to monitor fire conditions and restore power as soon as it is safe to do so.”
A PSPS is a temporary, preemptive power outage intended to reduce the risk of electrical equipment igniting wildfires during high-risk conditions.
Residents in affected areas are urged to:
  • Prepare for potential extended outages by charging devices and securing emergency supplies.
  • Monitor local evacuation orders and be ready to evacuate if directed.
  • Report power outages or hazards by calling (970) 247-5786 or visiting lpea.coop/outage-center.
LPEA is committed to providing timely updates through its website, social media channels, and direct communications.
