Pagosa Springs is one of more than 50 cities to host ‘Moms Unhinged’, a night of standup comedy featuring mom comedians (and the occasional dad), joking about everything from potty training to sex talks.
Tickets are now on sale. The popular show will take place at Liberty Theater at 7pm, Thursday September 26.
Created by Denver marketing consultant-turned-comedian-Andrea Marie, the hilarious show has been selling out 15+ shows per month in cities nationwide, including Denver, Chicago, and Seattle — and it comes at the perfect time, as the surgeon general recently issued a parental mental health advisory. If you’re a parent in 2024, you probably won’t be surprised that the new advisory cites such stressors as time demands, technology, social media, and the time crunch parents face.
“As moms, we’re under so much pressure and it’s so important to come together and see that someone else is having the same experience or thinks the same way. You don’t feel so alone,” says Marie. “This show is about connecting audiences with comics who get them and make them feel seen.”
If ticket sales are any indication, moms want and need to feel seen right now. With 90% of standup comics being men, moms’ opportunities to see their experiences reflected on stage are few and far between. “So it’s such a joy to see moms getting together and coming out to laugh and have a fun night out with their friends, ” says Marie.
Marie is committed not just to giving voice to moms’ experiences, but also to creating opportunities for women comics and compensating them fairly. She uses a profit sharing model, which, to put it lightly, is unique in the comedy world. “So often, comedians don’t earn a living wage, and as the shows do well, I want my comedians to get paid well, too,” she says.
With three to five comics performing at each show and 50 different performers on the Moms Unhinged roster, no two shows are exactly the same. The one thing you can expect, however is a good time.
As a Colorado Springs fan recently told us after a recent show, “My stomach hurts from laughing so hard.”
