Pine Ridge Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center, the 60-bed skilled nursing facility in Pagosa Springs, has launched an initiative aimed at guiding prospective long-term care residents through Medicaid’s complicated and sometimes stressful pre-screening process and addressing eligibility requirements.
Overseeing Pine Ridge’s new Medicaid Pre-Screening Program is Director of Medicaid Services Carol Glover, who provides free virtual and phone consultations to individuals with questions concerning long-term care costs and Medicaid coverage. “It’s important to start the conversation early and explore your Medicaid eligibility before you need to enter a skilled nursing facility,” said Glover.
Medicaid is a public health care program, funded primarily by the federal government, run at the state level, and administered by each county office. In Colorado, the program is known as Health First Colorado and it offers financial assistance for long-term care services. To qualify, individuals need to meet the program’s functional and financial eligibility requirements.
Understanding Medicaid’s complex rules and regulations can be challenging, which is why Pine Ridge offers Glover’s services as a free resource for the community. Potential facility residents have a wide range of information not just to gather but also understand, Glover added. This includes determining income and asset levels, what counts toward these, what types of functional needs are covered for skilled nursing care, and more, she said.

“This is a valuable community resource that saves time and makes the application process easier for prospective skilled nursing residents and their families,” said Matthew Mitchell, administrator of Pine Ridge Rehabilitation & Healthcare. “It’s crucial to plan ahead and get the facts on Medicaid coverage for your specific needs so you can make the best decisions for your future.”
