Opening for New Art Exhibit at Canyons of the Ancients National Monument

A new special exhibit titled My Calendar, featuring the artwork of treasured Four Corners artist Stanton Englehart, will open at the Canyons of the Ancients Visitor Center and Museum on September 8.

The museum is located in Dolores, Colorado.

A grand opening reception and celebration hosted by Southwest Colorado Canyons Alliance (SCCA), the Friends Group for Canyons of the Ancients National Monument, will begin at 5pm. The evening will feature remarks by guest curator Sharon Englehart, light refreshments, live music, and a silent auction featuring an original Englehart painting from his Rivers series.
All art lovers are invited to attend! SCCA asks that guests please RSVP online at https://swcocanyons.org/2023/07/29/stanton-englehart-reception/ or by calling 970-239-1730. If you are not an SCCA member, a $10 donation is suggested to support the event and the organization.

Stanton Englehart (1931-2009) grew up on a farm in Lewis, Colorado on the edge of the Great Sage Plains, moved to Durango in 1957 to attend Fort Lewis College, earned a Master’s Degree in Fine Arts from the University of Colorado, and taught in the Art Department at Fort Lewis College for 30 years until he retired in 1991 to paint full time.

My Calendar is a series of twelve paintings that represent the months of the year and was a culmination for Englehart who said: “It may be the best work I’ve done, both in concept and in the freedom with which it was painted. It shows me more clearly the scale at which I am capable of working.” The ideas for My Calendar grew out of a statement by Robert Henri “In great art there is no beginning and end point in time. All time is comprehended.”

Special thanks to Sharon Englehart and The Englehart Family Foundation for featuring this artwork at Canyons of the Ancients.

SCCA would like to thank Alpacka Raft, Big 5 Sporting Goods, Crested Butte Nordic, Diane McBride, Durango Outdoor Exchange, Glen Canyon Conservancy, Jan Wright, Mainstreet Brewery, Marcie Ryan Designs, Robert Torres, Sharlyn Sanchez, Sharon Englehart, and Taos Ski Valley, Inc. for donating to the silent auction.
