‘Summer Solstice Tours’ at Chimney Rock This Week

Welcome summer at Chimney Rock National Monument.

Summer Solstice Sunrise Tours at Chimney Rock National Monument are scheduled for this Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, June 20,21, and 22.

Experience the sunrise from the Chacoan Great House and learn why these events were important to the ancient ones. With a 360-degree vantage point and the hush of early morning in the wilderness, the sunrise from the Great House is a marvelous experience for the eyes and the spirit.

Check-in is from 4:30 – 4:45am. Program runs from 4:45 – 6:45am. You can reserve your spot online, here.

There is a 3-mile drive to the trailhead and a 30-to-45-minute uphill hike to the Great House Pueblo in predawn darkness (trail is rocky and steep in places). This requires very good flashlights and appropriate dress. Sunrise is at 7:00am; the return hike down the trail is in daylight. Following the sunrise, depart the Great House on your own or join your guide for an interpreted hike with fascinating information about the importance this location is thought to have had for the people who lived here a thousand years ago.

Guests must enter the Hwy 151 entry gate during the check-in period below; the gate will be locked at the end of this time. These are reservations-only programs, not suitable for children under 8. The fee is $16.00/adult and $8/child (ages 5-12) and is considered a non-refundable donation. A booking fee applies to each ticket purchased online or through the call center.

Making a reservation through the call center or website is the only way to guarantee a spot on this tour. Most programs are at full capacity prior to the event but we will accommodate walk-ins if space is available. For details, please call the Visitor Cabin (970-883-5359) 9am to 4pm Mountain Time. Reservations are strongly recommended and space is limited.

Walk-ins will be accommodated on a first-come, first-serve basis.
