LETTER: Corrections to Misinformation

This morning, I read a correction in a letter posted to Pagosa Daily Post, clarifying an “incorrect assertion”.

A DIFFERENT POINT OF VIEW: A Correction

I have heard the criticism that the Pagosa Daily Post is a one-way forum for posting one’s opinions, and this online publication fails to provide a way for readers to post their comments on material published.

Unfortunately, Social Media provides an echo chamber for like-minded individuals to quickly post their comments, and then — upon learning that incorrect assertions have been published — to later choose not to point out that an incorrect characterization of the facts may exist.

As an example, more than a month ago YouTube and Facebook was used to publish an ‘opinion’ regarding whether STRs are really destroying affordable housing.  That opinion was questioned in a Daily Post editorial.

EDITORIAL: Are STRs Bad for Pagosa?

For more than a month, I have been watching to see if any of the individuals who posted comment(s) to either the YouTube or Facebook social media would take advantage of an ability to re-post their initial comments, and point out that they may have presented incorrect facts… and that they may have even changed their opinion.

To my surprise neither the original author, nor the persons promoting the social media, nor any like-minded supporters have chosen to set the record straight.

I hope that some of the folks — who commented on a $100 million assertion — will make the effort to clarify whether their YouTube or Facebook comments may have now changed.
