‘Officer Involved Shooting’ in Aspen Springs

On Wednesday, January 4, 2023, at approximately 01:50, two Deputies from Archuleta County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO) responded to a call for service in Aspen Springs Unit 6, involving a disturbance between two male subjects.

During the incident, one of the male subjects deployed a firearm and attempted to discharge the firearm at an ACSO Deputy. The second Deputy discharged their duty weapon at the male subject, neutralizing the immediate threat. ACSO Deputies provided lifesaving support immediately after the incident until medics arrived on-scene. The incident was non-fatal, and the suspect was transported to the hospital for treatment.

The Archuleta County Sheriff’s Office, Officer-Involved Shooting and Deaths Policy was invoked to ensure that the incident is investigated in a thorough, fair and impartial manner.

The 6th Judicial District Critical Incident Team was activated immediately to conduct an independent criminal investigation of the incident. The Archuleta County Sheriff’s Office will be conducting an administrative investigation of the incident. At this time, both Deputies have been placed on Administrative Leave for the duration of the investigation, as per protocol and Sheriff’s Office Policy and Operating Procedure.

The incident remains under investigation, and further information will be provided as it becomes available.
