Colorado Sun Honored at Press Association Awards

By Larry Ryckman

The Colorado Sun brought home a pile of honors in this weekend’s state press association awards. We’re very proud about producing great stories for you and other Coloradans, and I hope you’ll take a moment today to help us continue doing this important work.

You can become a member right now for as little as $5 a month. As a public benefit corporation, we depend on support from readers like you to write the stories you won’t find anywhere else. The Sun is owned and operated by your fellow Coloradans. We’re independent and nonpartisan, and our mission is to give you the news you need to stay informed about our amazing state.

Stories like “Colorado ranchers are selling off cattle to survive another year of dried-up grass and parched soil.” It won first place for best agricultural story.

And “A Colorado family tried to save their cattle ranch by betting big on rare birds. It’s paying off.” It won first place for best feature story. The judges said: “Just a fantastic piece of journalism that any publication would be proud to have published.”

We also won first place for a story about how towns along the state line with New Mexico are worried about how marijuana legalization will affect their economies.

And the judges were bowled over by this first-place health story. We think you will be, too. They wrote: “This was an amazing piece. Just spectacular work. Found myself thinking “OMG!” and “Holy Cow!” as I read it. Drew me in and wouldn’t let go. In an incredibly deep category this was a standout.”

It’s always nice to win recognition from our industry peers, but we do this work for you, Colorado.

Please join our Sun community of supporters today. And you can make your membership dollars go further (and save yourself a few bucks) if you choose an annual plan.

One more thing: If you decide to become a member, please consider covering the small credit card transaction fees, which can really add up for us. Last year, those dollars would have allowed us to add an additional reporter.
