LETTER: Too Little, Too Late

Archuleta Commissioner Warren Brown has the audacity to state publicly that “Unfortunately, it sounds like La Plata County is at least leaning towards going down a different path than Archuleta County . . . and I can tell you, from my point of view, at least from a financial standpoint, I don’t believe that Archuleta County is prepared financially to stand up a health department.”

Who proposed and then installed Archuleta County’s investigative committee to supposedly study options for Archuleta County to establish its own health district? Warren Brown.

Who appointed members to this investigative committee who had unequivocally demonstrated a hatred of San Juan Basin Health Department, including science-deniers who picketed outside the home of SJBHD’s Executive Director? Warren Brown.

Who did not hold the investigative committee accountable to research the financial and other implications of Archuleta County forming its own health district? Warren Brown.

Of course, Brown was not alone; his cohorts Alvin Schaaf and Ronnie Maez abetted his efforts.

After repeated attempts by the Board of Health to work with Archuleta County commissioners, providing hundreds of pages of documents and reaching out to Archuleta County commissioners repeatedly to resolve fabricated (by Archuleta County) lack of communication issues, the Board of Health has finally decided what most of us observing for the past two years have seen: it is a waste of their time and professional staff resources to continue efforts to work with Archuleta County.

Oh, I forgot: who insulted SJBHD Executive Director Liane Jollon last year by asking her if she had ever been to Archuleta County before? That would also be Warren Brown.

Now, Commissioner Brown has had an epiphany? Now, he realizes that Archuleta County does not have the financial or professional capacity to run a health district? Not only too little too late. Why would anyone trust Commissioner Brown or any of our current county commissioners to move forward in good faith?

Alvin Schaaf lost the primary election. The only way the Board of Health and La Plata County commissioners might possibly think there is any hope in moving forward with Archuleta County would be if the remaining two commissioners immediately resign and we put people in office who support the existing Health District, who know how to value services and read documents.
