‘Seasonal Foods’ Demonstration This Morning; More Demonstrations Next Month

Healthy Archuleta invites you to participate in the 2022 seasonal food demonstrations, where we work with our six food pantries in Archuleta County to experience a new recipe with fresh, locally-grown produce.

The six food pantries (Community United Methodist Church, Amazing Grace Community Church, TARA Community Center, Pope John Paul II Catholic Church, St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church and Restoration Fellowship Church) are part of the Food Pantry Network, an initiative of the FSFE/Food Coalition. The produce for this effort is being donated from local commercial and backyard growers.

The seasonal food demonstrations are taking place during August and September. Participants in the seasonal food demonstration will learn from Sherry Vanatta, a registered dietitian (RD) who has been an RD with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics since 1999. Before Vanatta was an RD, she was an educator, teaching first grade. After becoming an RD, she worked for the Indian Health Service, providing diabetes education for Native American communities. She is passionate about teaching people healthy recipes.

Vanatta is a master gardener in Texas and, since moving to Pagosa in the spring of 2021, she has been working on becoming a master
gardener in Colorado. She has been involved in the work of Healthy Archuleta since she arrived in our community. Vanatta hosted the first seasonal food demonstration on August 15 at Restoration Fellowship.

The next seasonal food demonstration will take place today, Wednesday, August 31, at 11am at Pope John Paul II Catholic Church, 353 S. Pagosa Blvd…. with more demonstrations on Thursday, September 1, at 11am at St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church Food Pantry, 225 S. Pagosa Blvd.; September 13 at 10am at the Community United Methodist Church at 434 Lewis St.; and September 21 at Amazing Grace Community Church at 77 Navajo Circle.

Participants will get to learn to prepare the recipe, taste the food, and take home a recipe and nutrition information.
