Lyle Lovett, one of America’s most distinctive and original singer-songwriters, takes the stage under the stars on the ballfields at the La Plata County Fairgrounds in Durango with his Large Band on Monday, July 4, 2022 at 7:30pm with gates to the Fairgrounds ballfield event area opening at 4pm.
The show is presented by the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College in partnership with KSUT Public Radio.
An Evening with Lyle Lovett and his Large Band will feature an arrangement of Lovett standards, as well as a preview of songs from his upcoming album on Verve Records, scheduled for release this May. Lovett wowed Durango audiences when he took the stage at Fort Lewis College in 2009. While Lovett was initially labeled a country singer, the tag never quite fit, and since bursting on to the international stage in the ‘80s, he has emerged as a talent known for an eclectic array of music, ranging from country and folk to big-band swing and traditional pop.
With a unique voice, Lovett has managed to blend the trails blazed by the great Texas storytellers such as Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark, and on-the-edge writers such as Randy Newman and Tom Waits. He has evolved into one of music’s most vibrant and iconic performers.
In addition to his four Grammy Awards, he was presented with the Americana Music Association’s inaugural Trailblazer Award and was named Texas State Musician. “Lyle is a born storyteller,” wrote Betty Clarke for the United Kingdom’s Guardian, following his performance at the Royal Festival Hall in London. “His music is an eclectic blend of traditional country, gospel, folk, jazz and big band, wrapped around well-crafted songs. As for his voice, it burns with pain and bristles with wry humor.”
Tickets — general admission for festival style lawn seating, $55, with reserved seats available for $85 – first went on sale in March. A limited number of VIP tickets will also be available for $150 each and include reserved seating, as well as reserved parking at the Fairgrounds and refreshments (appetizers and adult beverages) in the VIP tent adjacent to the stage area.
