DMV Opening Intermittent Office in Archuleta County, Starting on May 26

At a recent work session, the Archuleta Board of County Commissioners heard a brief presentation about a new Colorado pilot program that will be offering intermittent Department of Motor Vehicles services in rural communities that lack a permanent DMV office.

I believe it’s been at least 15 years since Archuleta County closed the DMV office previously located in the historical County Courthouse downtown.  Maybe 20 years?  As a result, Pagosans have been required to drive to Durango to obtain certain DMV services, although a limited range of services have also become available online in recent years.

Through its new program, DMV has agreed to set up a temporary office in the County Courthouse, as demand indicates, and provide a full range of services to the Archuleta County community, with the first event to be held this Thursday, May 26.

According to Archuleta County Manager, Derek Woodman:

“Obviously, there have been no DMV services in Archuleta County for a number of years.  One of the services that the state created recently is, essentially, a traveling road show.  They now offer that service, and we’re probably the first county to obtain this service, where they’ll come in and set up shop in a space that we provide, and offer all the DMV services… with the exception of the physical driving test.

“That starts on May 26, so we have it all completely set up.  The individual customer will register online; they fill it out and schedule their time.”

Services offered will include first time Colorado Driver License or ID cards; Out-of-State Transfers; Issue and/or Renew Driver License, Permit, or Identification Card; Motor Vehicle Records; Reinstatements and more.

You can sign up here using Sign Up Genius. The ‘Submit’ button is located at the bottom of the page. (No scrolling needed).

Several dozen people have signed up as of this morning (May 23), but many slots currently remain available. You will need to provide proof of your identity. You can find a list of acceptable ID documents by clicking here.

The office entrance will be located at the rear of the downtown Courthouse.

DMV2GO will not offer driver testing. To our knowledge the only testing facility in Archuleta County is Pagosa Driving School. You can reach them at 970-749-6361 or http://pagosadrivingschool.com/

If a driving test is needed, you must have this done before your scheduled appointment with DMV2GO.

DMV plans to offer these services in Archuleta County on a repeated basis, according to local demand.
