Tickets are available now for a special fundraiser on Saturday, April 9 from 6-8:30pm at the PLPOA clubhouse to raise funds for the Ruby Sisson Library Foundation’s campaign to expand and renovate your library.
This elegant event will feature a silent auction of 17 different table settings, each for up to eight people, designed by some of Pagosa’s most creative artists. The settings are based on popular books including “Like Water for Chocolate,” “Pride and Prejudice,” “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy,” “Foods of the Southwest Indian Nations,” “Under the Tuscan Sun,” “Where the Wild Things Are,” “To Kill a Mockingbird” and “The Very Hungry Caterpillar.”
A limited number of tickets still are available because of space limitations and the popularity of this event. Purchase tickets at $50 per person at your library (cash or check only) or at https://pagosalibrary.org/library-foundation/the-library-affair. On that website you also can get an advance look at the beautiful table settings and vote online for your favorites with a $1 donation per vote.
The library’s current building opened in 1989 and underwent its first expansion in 2005. As the needs of our community evolve and grow, your library now is preparing to expand by 50 percent to 11,300 square feet. The addition will offer community meeting space, a dedicated area for children’s literacy programs, a room exclusively for teens and tweens, private study rooms, an intergenerational hands-on learning space, easy access to self-checkout and drop-off, and a beautiful outdoor reading garden.
Nearly $1.5 million already has been raised toward the $4 million expansion project. Numerous generous sponsors are underwriting this event so that the auction proceeds and other donations can go directly to the expansion campaign. If you are unable to attend, we hope you will consider contributing to this effort.
National Library Week
April 3-9 is National Library Week, with this year’s theme being “Connect with Your Library.” We are happy to welcome you to our library any time you want to come – and especially so next week.
Census data next Tuesday
On April 1 the 1950 Census will be released to the public and anyone can access the data for free through a dedicated website at https://www.archives.gov/research/census/1950. On Tuesday, April 5 from 1-2 p.m. Brad will lead an informative presentation at your library about how to access these public records and why they are so important to genealogical research.
Teen DIY next Wednesday
Fourth – 12th graders are invited to a free in-person teen DIY session on Wednesday, April 6 from 4-5 p.m. for steampunk crafts.
S.T.E.A.M enrichment kits
Participants in this free enrichment program for youngsters aged five and up receive a kit guiding you through science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (S.T.E.A.M.) projects. The kits are available all month but registration is required by calling your library at 970-264-2209.
Family storytimes
Wednesdays from 10-11 a.m. join us for free in-person children’s stories, games and plenty of reasons to get up and move. The next Discovery Time takes place Saturday, April 2 on Facebook at 2:30 p.m.
ESL classes
Free in-person evening classes take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays with 4-5 p.m. reserved for beginners and 5-7 p.m. for both intermediate and advanced students. Please help us spread the word about these classes to others in our community who would be interested, and contact us by phone or email if you have any questions.

We have two nonfiction Spanish-language books by Don Miguel Ruiz and Barbara Emrys that are books one and two in the Mystery School series. “El Actor: Como Alcanzar la Autenticidad” (“The Actor: How to Live an Authentic Life”) explores the importance of acting throughout our lives, given that babies’ first skill is to mimic others as they watch, listen and imitate. “Eros: Retorno al Amor Incondicional” (“Eros: A Return to Unconditional Love”) examines the conflict between true love and all the lies that we have been taught about love.
Other nonfiction
“Life Force” by Tony Robbins includes advice and research in precision medicine from more than 100 medical minds to help extend the length and quality of your life. “Sandy Hook” by Elizabeth Williamson explores how the families devastated one of nation’s worst mass shootings are fighting back against false conspiracy narratives.

“Yellowstone” starring Kevin Costner is season four. “All Creatures Great and Small” is season two.

“The Match” by Harlan Coben is a thriller that begins with a match on a DNA data base.

“The Love of My Life” by Rosie Walsh tells of an obituary writer who learns the wife he loves doesn’t really exist. “The Darkest Place by Phillip Margolin features Robin Lockwood, an increasingly prominent defense attorney in Portland, Oregon.
Other fiction
“The Latinist” by Mark Prins follows an ambitious young scholar trying to escape her scheming adviser at Oxford University. “The Swimmers” by Julie Otsuka features a group of recreational swimmers deeply affected when their pool closes.
