Durango Elks Lodge Announces 2021 Scholarship Awards

The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Durango Lodge No.507, announces nine local scholarship awards, each for $1,000. Recipients were selected based on leadership accomplishments, academic achievement and financial need.

Shaylee Owen from Bayfield High School will receive a Colorado Elks Association Scholarship Grant. The $1,000 grant, awarded by the Durango Elks Lodge, is made possible by the Elks National Foundation through the Colorado Elks Association. Shaylee will be attending New Mexico State University where she will study agriculture education and extension and family consumer sciences.

Bayfield High School student Maddy Abdella will receive the Fred Zimmerman Memorial Scholarship of $1,000. She will be attending Pueblo Community College studying business marketing.

An additional seven students will receive $1,000 Durango Elks Lodge Scholarships:

From Pagosa Springs High School, Ivory Carpenter will be attending North Carolina State University where she will major in psychology, and Kylie Keuning from Pagosa Springs High School will study speech pathology and audiology at Calvin University.

Isabella Brand, an Animas High School student, will be attending Macalester College where she will study humanities.

Ignacio High School student Mia Carrillo will be attending Colorado State University pursuing a pre-medical course of study.

Rylie O’Connell, Bayfield High School, will be studying at Mesa Community College to become a veterinarian technician.

From Durango High School, Savanah Maez will be attending Fort Lewis College where she will major in psychology, and Stevi Cameron will be attending Northern Arizona University where she will study journalism/communications.

The scholarship committee of BPOE No. 507 congratulates all 2021 graduating seniors and invites upcoming 2022 seniors to apply online for the Elks National Foundation Most Valuable Student Scholarship Contest. Applications are available in the fall and open to all seniors.
