OPINION: Think on These Things, on Veterans Day

By Jason Crow

I became an Army paratrooper after September 11, 2001, because I strongly believe in serving the country we love.

When taking the oath, I made a promise to my country to uphold our Constitution and protect its citizens from all enemies, foreign and domestic. I served with some of the bravest people in the world and witnessed the sacrifices they and their families made, day in and day out.

But, the unfortunate reality is that many who serve struggle in the transition back into civilian life.

Many veterans return home carrying visible and invisible scars, are unable to find good-paying jobs, can’t access veterans’ health care, and battle homelessness and addiction. Too often, the promises made to them go unfulfilled.

So today is a day to renew our commitment to fighting for our veterans as they have fought for us — to receive mental health treatment, medical care, housing, education, job training, and placement. And to remove any red tape that prevents them from receiving the benefits they worked so hard for.

If you’re with me in supporting our veterans, add your name today to this petition.

I took an oath to my country to uphold its values and to protect my fellow service members while in uniform, and I made that same promise as a member of Congress. I will not stop working for our veterans and their families and am confident that the incoming administration will be a partner in this important cause.

Thank you to all the fellow veterans across Colorado and this country for your sacrifice. And thank you to the military families who support our service members every day.

This Veterans Day, I encourage each of us to thank the veterans in our lives and in our communities and to keep finding ways to honor their sacrifices.
