LETTER: A Response to Myself

Last week, I submitted a letter to the Daily Post — “My Very First Welfare Check” — expressing my frustration with the way states, communities and businesses have been shut down by ‘public health orders.’

Yes, you’re right, I did rant a little bit. And to my embarrassment, displayed a little too much anger and pride. But as I wrote about a waitress, it was not really she who was on my mind.

The governor of Illinois has shut down my daughter’s two fitness studios. The clock is ticking and all he’s worried about is the flu. Or is that all? I wonder, how many lives has he saved? How many has he already destroyed?

No, I don’t believe this is about the flu. This is about fear, and they have convinced us all that we are going to cause someone close to us to die.

Death. It’s the only certainty that all of us own and have in common. We will all die someday. Just like the men and women who have died to give us our freedom in this great country. Freedom that we have given away so quickly and easily.

It must be illegal… the governors who have discovered that they are emperors, sitting in their offices and issuing decrees of who is essential and who is not.

I have to ask, how many million small businesses and families would you be willing to destroy to “maybe” save someone you love?

My daughter. Who is bravely raising three of my grandchildren. And yes, they would sacrifice all of you, to keep me. And all I want is for them to live fearlessly and enjoy the freedom that is our birthright.
